Agi’s orange/grey smokey eye

13 Mar

We’ve not seen Agi in a while, so here she is, rocking a nice winged smokey eye with a metallic orange pigment blended into a soft moth-coloured purpley-grey.

Anything in the beige, taupe, tan, brown, fawn, bronze, gold, rust, etc family is great for bringing out blue eyes.

And from the archives, here’s a video of me doing Chloe’s makeup (and singing) in our parents’ bathroom way back in… 2006 or 2007.

Hope you’re all having an excellent week – only two more sleeps until the weekend, where I will be painting faces at the pub for St Patrick’s Day 🙂

… I plan to steal.

makeup store stud eye - rebecka andersson

By Rebecka Andersson for Swedish makeup brand and outlet, Makeup Store (they’re worldwide, but here are links for my lovers in the UK and Australia).  Follow them on Facebook, they put up great ideas for inspiration – look out especially for step-by-step photos on Tutorial Tuesday!

They do good everything.  And their magazine is brilliant.  Just lots of big pretty pictures for me to hand to my volunteers/models and say ‘what do you want to look like today?”

Last time I was in Australia I went to the Burnside Village outlet with my lovely Mum and she bought me a mascara in ‘aubergine’ which is a nice dark purple, perfect for days when you want dark lashes but you don’t want them to be black.  Hey, it happens.

Mum bought herself an eyeliner pencil for the waterline and the salesgirl gave a very good tip – don’t go for a bright white eyeliner above your lower lash-line, if you’re trying to make the whites of your eyes look brighter.  Go for an off-white with a yellow tone, as it will give the same brightening effect, but a pure white can actually make the whites of your eyes look discoloured by comparison.

Happy brand discovery, my pretties!

EDIT: The M Magazine comes out twice a year, in February and September.  Burnside Village outlet of Makeup Store is closed for the foreseeable future, sadly 😦  but you can place orders by ringing your nearest outlet.  Check online for contacts 🙂

emo eyebrows

9 Mar

Oh, but I was in a truly foul mood yesterday.  Not even I wanted to hang out with me.  Things were desperately grim.  There was only one thing for it; a huge frown.  A metres-deep furrowing of the brow.  A grimace so cavernous it would make you dizzy.

BUT!  Pulling such a face is bad business – what if the wind changed?  And who wants wrinkles?  Audrey Hepburn herself said “happy girls are the prettiest girls”.  As I contemplated how to reconcile this titanic conundrum, it occurred to me that I could just draw an expression on my face.  After all, with makeup, anything is possible.

Voila – anyone I encountered would know that I was shitty as all hell, but my fore-skin (time-saving contraction of the words ‘forehead’ and ‘skin’) would remain ‘smooth’ and ‘unblemished’, faithful gatekeeper of the secret of my age.

So I whipped out the eyeliner (not brow pencil… not today – I needed sharper lines than my soft crayons would provide), and sharpened it real good.  When DIY-ing an eyebrow, what you’re looking to do is draw wee hairs.  None of your thick stripes and long lines; sketch on little bits here and there to fill in.  This is what you want, to enhance or alter the overall effect of your existing brows.  And you need a sharp pencil for that.  Unless of course the look you are going for is a deliberate thick line, which certainly has its place.

But anyway – here is my grumpy brow.

grumpy eyebrows

OOOOH look how ANGRY that looks!  SUPER PISSED OFF!

Then I felt sad that I had wasted any time at all feeling so bloody awful, and yet again didn’t want to pull a face, so I just drew on some sad eyebrows, for demonstration purposes.  Here they are.

sad eyebrows

Awwww, don’t you just want to sweep me into your arms and tell me that everything is going to be OK?

Now, I know what you’re thinking.  “Bloody Imo, there she goes pulling faces and editing photos again.”  Oh no.  Scroll back up so both sets of peepers are on the screen, the cover both sets of eyebrows with your hands.  See?  My expression in both of these photos was actually completely neutral.

And it’s so easy to do.  Too lazy to engage your facial muscles to express an emotion?  You can buy an eyeliner pencil for as little as 50p at H&M, and moving your face will then be a thing of the past, if you so desire.

Angry brows are created by thickening the inner corner of your natural brow line.  Start below rather than above your natural shape.  Bring the start-point of your brows slightly in towards each other, and create a harder angle up into the arch than you naturally have.  The brow should finish shorter than your natural brows, and above the natural line.  Basically, frown in the mirror, take note, relax your expression and draw it on.  When you’ve done one brow, sharpen the pencil before moving on to the next.

Sad brows start higher in the inner corner and finish lower on the outer edges.  They’re also longer.  Smudge them out and down.  There is also more distance between them.  Do this, then sit back, relax and wait for everyone to come up to you all day and night saying “are you ok?  Can I get you anything?”

So there you have it.  You might not ever have the need or want to do this.   But now you know.  Makeup is so much more than covering something up or making your irises ‘pop’.

Clydebank College, HND Makeup Artistry

7 Mar

So, best beloved, you’re all gagging to know how my interview for a place on the above course went.  While you would be forgiven for thinking that they were interviewing me to see if I was a suitable candidate, in fact what actually happened was that I interviewed them to see whether their course is in the running to be the Next Amazing Fun Thing that I do.

As you can imagine, competition for this accolade is FIERCE.  But I am pleased to announce that the Clydebank College did very well indeed.  The course sounds interesting, challenging and varied.  The course director and lecturer that interviewed me seemed cool.  Tick, tick.

I was surprised (and a little deflated) by how many others there were being interviewed, but not surprised by the fact that I was 15 years older than most of them.  I was not surprised to be told that we’d be expected to ‘look the part’ (ie dress as if we are already working in the industry), but I was surprised that this meant wearing a lot of makeup every day; I had assumed that, because of the practical nature of the tutorials, that we would be practicing on each other and that it’d be better for us to show up with bare faces.  Anyhoo.

Clydebank College is situated in Dalmuir.  I feel quite sorry for it actually.  The walk from the train station to the college was uninspiring to say the least, past buildings that on the ground floor were solid shutters, grills, bars.  Everything required to keep desperation and poverty out.

The college itself is nice though, new and big and seemed to have a lot going on.  I would be very happy to study there.  If candidates are being selected on the basis of elderly-ness, Australianism, fox-factor, passion and really-badly-wanting-it, I’m a shoe-in.  If they’re going to be sticking to their pesky entry requirements then not so much.

I’m certainly not holding my breath because the course seems to have a LOT of applicants, and there are only about 30 places available.  I sincerely hope Clydebank College recognises the rare opportunity they have been given to align themselves to the Imogen Maxwell brand at this early stage of my glittering career.

I’ll find out within 2 weeks and let y’all know.  If they won’t have me then I’ll just bloody well teach myself body painting.  Recruiting nude models now!

tan body, white face

5 Mar

Have you ever been all dressed up for a night out, bit o’ skin on show, done up to the nines, feeling fab… only to find Facebook peppered with photos like THIS the next day?

DSCN0517

Oh no, the dreaded GHOST FACE!  And all because of a sneaky, cheeky little ingredient that’s found in almost all skin makeup; titanium dioxide.  Sounds evil and poisonous, but in fact titanium dioxide is one of the most effective absorbers/refractors of skin damaging UVA/UVB rays from the sun.  As most makeup, moisturiser and face powders have a Sun Protection Factor in them these days, it’s almost certainly on your face right now as you read this.

Titanium dioxide also happens to be the most commonly used white pigment in the world, because it’s the whitest thing there is.

white_chicks

It’s in everything.  Milk.  Paper.  Toothpaste.  Ink.  The lines around the edge of the tennis court.  Sunscreen.  And like I said, almost certainly in your foundation; definitely if it’s got an SPF in it.

And it’s how you can end up with the white-face-brown-body effect; the bright light of the flash is picked up and reflected by it, potentially leading to this:

busy fake tan

You have to go looking for them, but there are foundations that don’t contain an SPF and/or titanium dioxide.  For foundation for flash photography, Revlon Colourstay and L’Oreal True Match are decent ‘high street/drug store’ ones, or Make Up Forever (a bit pricier).  MAC Face & Body foundation is one that’s recommended by a lot of makeup artists for use in flash photography.  For anyone wishing to recreate my natural sun-kissed glow, I used Maybelline Dream Matte Mousse in Cocoa.

It also depends a bit on your skin type; while an oily finish will make skin look shiny ergo paler under flash, one that’s too matte can be ashy and ageing.  But in the interests of avoiding the ghost-face thing, look for a matte rather than shimmery finish.

If you’re just working with what you’ve already got, have a look at the ingredients in your foundation; titanium dioxide is usually listed as one of the last ingredients.  So if you know that it’s there, and you know you’re going to be flash-photographed, you can do something about it.

It’s not just fake tan that can give the unwanted contrast; even if you’re just naturally olive skinned and wearing makeup that looks like a perfect match in the mirror, the flash can still pick it up.  To give an even all-over colour in flash photographs, just mix a bit of your foundation into a body lotion (or use a moisturiser with SPF) and apply liberally all over your chest/shoulders/neck/arms/wherever there’s bare skin near your face.

If you use any kind of setting/finishing powder over your foundation, this can be a culprit too!  An even WORSE culprit, in fact, as powders don’t often label themselves as SPF, but usually they do have titanium dioxide in them.  So you’ve really got to go looking to see if it’s there.  I’m still searching for the perfect powder but I think MAC Blot Powder is pretty damn close – and it comes in a lot of shades so you can get the perfect match.  And hopefully avoid this:

St Patrick’s day nails

3 Mar

First up today, a bit of housekeeping – apologies to any bitterly disappointed readers who, like me, were unable to take advantage of the e.l.f sale I posted about the other day – I didn’t realise they only deliver to Canada and the USA.  Secondly, thank you all so much for clicking through to see a photo of me in a bra – site views were through the roof the last couple of days!  How exciting.

And now, you’ve had your fun(bags)… Back to the serious business of MAKEUP!

So what I attempted to do here was some kind of St Patrick’s Day manicure, using the two Illamasqua nailpolishes I got as part of a mystery pack I bought a few weeks ago.  The dark one (Rampage) is a nice dark ninja-turtle green that looks black until you go outside.  It’s good.  I like nailpolish that looks black but isn’t.

My idea was to do a reverse French manicure that looked like a glass of Guinness, and then I was like, BACK IT UP – I’VE GOT DARK AND LIGHT GREEN NAILPOLISH, so why not make it look like a Guinness with nasty-ass green food dye in it, just like how they serve it on St Patrick’s Day in the pub!!!  And a mediocre idea was born.

nail polishDSC04728DSC04730

I almost didn’t put these pictures up because I made such a pig’s ear of it – look at that, er, black four-leaf clover.

Moving right along, I painted my right hand with Barry M Nail Paint in #284 Emerald Green.  Barry M Nail Paints are yet another example of an excellent UK high-street cosmetic brand; their stuff is only a few quid and it’s just as good as what you’d pay ten times as much for.  Experiment and get crazy with all the colours, yo.  It won’t cost you.

Fly, my pretties, get your tacky green on – and remember, if you go back far enough… You.  Are.  Irish.

A re-blog! Mostly because I am a naughty lazy devil who didn’t have a blog prepared for yesterday when I was meant to post, and partly because … who doesn’t love a bargain. This isn’t a brand I am familiar with but one that the kids in the know rave about, so I’LL be shopping up a storm 🙂

Eli's Mommy's avatarLife Through the Eyes of a "Cat"

e.l.f. is having a 1/2 off sale on their Studio line of products! This makes their already inexpensive products cost virtually nothing!!!

If you’ve never tried e.l.f. this is the perfect time! If you are familiar with e.l.f. then this is a great time to stock up!!!!!

… and if it’s nice n’ sharp, you can start at the outside of the brow, using the pointy pencil tip to pick the hairs up and colour them against the grain, which keeps it off the skin.

This creates a fetching wild-n-bushy look:

The Maybelline Eye Studio Brow Master pencils come with one on the end; most brow pencils do, and if not, just use an old clean mascara wand.

More eyebrow tips:

Adding a light-coloured powder or pencil (well blended) underneath the arch of the brow can really lift the whole face and highlight the eyebrows nicely.

Put down the tweezers.  Step away from the tweezers.  If you’ve been plucking your brows for years and have gotten into a bit of a pickle and found yourself with misshapen, skinny, stubbly worms on your face, I challenge you to let them grow wild and free for… 6 months.  You’ll thank me.  It’ll be hard at first, and if you need to deal with a monobrow or hair on your actual eyelids, be my guest.  But for a much more flattering, youthful brow, more is more.

This is me, on the beach with Chloe, and as you can see, we’re both wondering how the hell I’m going to come up with today’s post.  My phone-camera is broken, and the digital camera has been missing for days.  I haven’t been able to capture any of this week’s ground-breaking makeup artistry!  DISASTER!

You probably also noticed how amazing our eyebrows are.  I get mine threaded at Superdrug every time I’m down in Glasgow, and as regular readers will also know, I’m a huge fan of Maybelline’s Eye Studio Master Shape brow pencil, either in Blonde or Soft Brown, depending on how much drama I plan to bring with my brows.  My hair, eyes and skin are pale and there’s something I like about having high-contrast dark-dark lashes and brows against that light background.

I’ll show you how it’s done when my technology situation improves, but for now, here’s something for you to contemplate – courtesy of http://www.mandatory.com
